Maine Vacation
Last week we took a break from house renovations and went on a week-long vacation with the Kerrs to cool, 85 degree Maine. The temperature, mixed with some amazing scenery and great company made this trip one of our favorites. To get there we flew to Boston, rented a car and then drove up the coast to Maine. Along the way we passed through New Hampshire. We were only in the state for about 30 minutes, but we still managed to stop and get a photo to verify we were there.
In Maine we spent most of our days exploring Acadia National Park and most of our evenings hanging out in Bar Harbor. On our first day in Acadia we traveled around the park seeing the sights and hiking a few trails.
Our favorite hike was to the top of Pemetic, one of several mountains in the park. Most of the hike was steep and rocky, but we had a good time conquering it.
We devoted the second day to biking. The park is known for its carriage trails originally built by John D. Rockefellar. The trails have been well maintained and were an awesome way to see everything. Megan & Steve traveled by tandem...Dan and I were not that brave.
Bar Harbor was a cute town, with lots of shops and restaurants to visit. Our Bed & Breakfast was minutes from the city square so we were able to walk everywhere in town.
The four of us are over-the-top competitive and one of the bars had a bocce ball court which meant several intense games. Below is a photo of us measuring to see who was the closest. Someone else at the bar even mentioned that we must be very serious players since we were measuring. I didn't bother explaining to them that we're like this at every game we play.
Oh yes, we also made a stop at Pirate's Cove mini golf. Did I mention the weather was amazing? We pretty much spent all day and night outside and it felt great!
Dan’s main goal for the trip was to eat seafood at every meal. His favorite was our visit to a Lobster Pound, where we literally picked out our live lobster and they took it back to the kitchen to cook. Minutes later we were eating…delicious.
Near the end of the trip we visited the Penobscot Bridge, a 43-story tall bridge with an observatory at the top. I, being the structural engineering nerd I am, loved it! They even had a small portion of the bridge near the entrance which showed how the bridge was made. Dan, Megan and Steve we're cool enough to put up with my nerdiness.
Right next to the bridge was Fort Knox, an old fort from the 1800s. We wished we could have spent more time here, because this ended up being really interesting.
Overall, Maine was beautiful. Dan and I have been wanting to visit for several years now and I'm so happy that the Kerrs came with us (even if it wasn't Canada). It was fun having others along who also get excited about hiking, biking and trying new things. We need another vacation to recover from the trip itself, but I loved every minute of it. Thanks to my in-laws for watching Tucker!

Have been to that observatory & isn't the view great? I will have to dig out the photos of "popsy" and grandma at Acadia and post them. From 1989!
ReplyDeleteThere's no "r" in Acadia, but there ARE...I don't know how to finish this joke.
ReplyDeleteSea massaged mountains?
ReplyDeleteGood. I like it!
DeleteYes, the observatory was amazing. It's cool you can see over 75 miles away.
