Progress Update

We've made a lot of progress on the house over the last couple of weekends, but the stuff that has been accomplished is really only exciting if you are actually planning to live in the house as they center around either not having the house burn down randomly or not contracting mesothelioma every time you visit the basement to do laundry.  Nonetheless, to prove that we are actually getting work done I've posted an update on the progress.

Project #1:  Upgrading to 200 Amp Electrical Service
We do not actually do any of the electrical, we have an awesome electrician for that, and over the past few weekends he has been busy.  Currently the electricity in the house is knob and tube and all of it is ran off of a 60 amp fuse box.  The plan is to replace the fuse box with a 200 amp breaker panel..  Over the next year our electrician will work room by room to ground all of the receptacles and add lighting and outlets as necessary.  Step 1 of the process has began with the installation of the new panel.  Notice the fuse box on the left, funny thing is that the previous owner was an electrical engineer. Two of the neighbors have already told us that they were surprised the house hasn't already burned down.

Project #2:  Removing Asbestos from Basement
Dan and his stepdad Marc tackled the basement last weekend and removed all of the asbestos that had been wrapped around the 2" hot water boiler piping, which circles around the basement. This was an ugly project and I am very appreciative to the two of them for battling the heat and hazards of the job so I didn't have to.  It's very nice to have this one marked off our list of things to do.

I don't have a great picture before they removed the asbestos, but if you look above at the "Before" picture for the electrical you can see an asbestos covered pipe in the top of the photo.  After removing the asbestos Dan covered all of the piping with fiberglass insulation seen below.
